Seu Jorge aka Jorge Mario da Silva is today one of
the most successful and
acclaimed artists inside and outside Brazil. One
might wonder how a kid from
the slums made it so big in both the competitive
music and film industries in
such a short period. But the answer is simple: Seu
Jorge is the real Brazil:
he is authentic; his music is raw like the name of
his latest album. Seu
Jorge is the embodiment of the common Brazilian
chap that is warm at heart
and that carries the rhythm of samba in his soul.
But Seu Jorge's life never went smoothly as one
could predict.
Born in 1970 in the outskirts of the overpopulated Rio de Janeiro, Seu Jorge had a tough life and faced work from a very early age. He worked in various jobs but music was always in the back of his mind and all spare money was used to go to the cinema on Sunday afternoons. Unfortunately an unexpected tragedy came in Seu Jorge's way: his brother was killed in a neighbourhood shooting. Seu Jorge lost his smile and his family grew apart. He went to the streets and lived as a homeless, but again his fate was about to change.
Music is always present in the streets and corners of Brazil, and music never abandoned Seu Jorge. Luckily Seu Jorge was invited to participate in a play as a singer and for the first time he allied his two main passions. From there he was only one step away from fame.
In 1998 Seu Jorge released his first album "Moro no Brazil" (I live in Brazil) with the band Farofa Carioca. The band was an original and groundbreaking project since it incorporated different styles such as samba, reggae, funk, rap, capoeira, circus and dance. The first album brought him recognition from the Brazilian musical circle but Seu Jorge was not satisfied yet, since he dreamed of an international success.
In 2001 Seu Jorge released his first solo album: "Samba Esporte Fino" as homage to Brazil's most famous music style, samba. For him, samba is the truth of Brazil, its golden medal. His samba is new and fresh since it combines hi-hop and social awareness like never before. His deep voice and his words touch the listeners' soul, because one can spot they are authentic.
In 2002 Seu Jorge's charisma gave him a part in the internationally acclaimed "City of God". In this film Seu Jorge played a ruthless mobster, called Knockout Kned. His performance caught the attention of American director Wes Anderson that invited him in 2003 to star in his "Life Aquatic" as a member of the Zissou crew. In this film Seu Jorge also composed the soundtrack by performing covers in Portuguese of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust "Life in Mars". The result couldn't be more spectacular and his covers transmit calmness and reflect the blue of the sky and the waves of the sea.
After the massive success and the international recognition of "Life Aquatic" Seu Jorge released "Cru" (Raw)in 2004. In this album Seu Jorge exposes his true self by assuming the imperfections of his voice.
But Seu Jorge's strongest point is the human contact and with this I mean live performances. His shows are extremely upbeat, he is an animal of the stage, but at the same time he is also naive and unstudied. That's why it is impossible not to feel blown away by his touching rawness.
Seu Jorge is touring Europe this autumn.
