Project 1 are an underground, R’n’B slash Garage group that are doing music, but with a new twist. Seven went out to meet them to find out what they're about…
So what are everyone’s names?
Junior Mozart: Well, my name is Junior Mozart. I got this name from Slim because when I started making productions I used a lot of strings, and it kinda sounded classical and stuff. One day, slim said, “Arhh, he sounds like Mozart” and because I was a young one, I just put the name, Junior and put it together and I’m 17.
Slim: I’m Slim Esquire. I used to be called Slim B back in the day, but I weren’t feeling that too much. One day, Esquire came to my head so I called myself Slim Esquire and I’m 25.
Ziggy-man: I’m 23.
Wow, your 23?
Ziggy-man: I know I look young. Oil of Olay innit. I’m called Ziggy-man and I got the name because I always wanted to be a super hero.
Typah: You can just see him with the Y fronts? (Laughter)
Ziggy-man: My nickname was Ziggy, and one day I was just spitting and Ziggy-man came out innit. It went well, so I thought yeah man and people liked it, so I stuck with it.
Typah: My name’s Typah. This stands for Talented Young Person Aiming High. It fits me to the T and I’m 21.
Why are you called Project 1?
Slim: All right, first of all we were called Front Line. Then certain members left. Plus there was another group called Front Line and we didn’t want to have the same name. Then I wanted to be called The Movement. Then one of our guys said what about Project 1. So half of us wanted to be called The Movement, and half of us wanted to be called Project 1. Then we put all the names into a hat and Project 1 came out.
What does each member bring to the group?
Junior Mozart: I do most of the productions. Slim and Ziggy have just got the deep lyrics. In my opinion not a lot of people have that depth or carry them kind of lyrics. Typah he makes beats as well but he’s an all rounder, he brings a lot to us.
Slim: He knows about the game and he’s got quite a few links as well. Then there’s K-giro and he’s been here from the beginning and he spits as well.
What does music represent for each person?
Slim: For me, it’s a way out of this mediocre life…a way to get my message across.
Ziggy-man: It’s just one of those things that I really enjoy plus we are good at it.
Typah: Music is everything to me. I work doing music. I can Mc, Rap, and Dj. It’s a way of life, it’s a way of talking to people.
Junior Mozart: It dictates my life. Everything I do is based around it somehow. It’s because I started when I was young; it’s what I’ve come to know.
So what are the next steps?
Typah: Take down Roca-fella!! (laughter), it will be called Roca-fella Project One Records. Them Americans I’m fed up with them (laughter)
Slim: Nah, on a serious note, videos and DVDs.
Typah: We might even get like a clothing line running.
Junior Mozart: Our cd / album are our priority though.
Where do you see yourselves in the next ten years?
Slim: I would like to see myself deep in the game.
Typah: I see myself butt naked in the Project One mansion (laughter). I want a mansion, and I want my own little section. Everyone can have their own section but in my section I don’t wanna be wearing clothes (laughter). But really, I wanna move my mum out of here as well. That’s one of our main motivations our parents!
Try and describe your group in three words
Ziggy-man: Conscious, fresh
Typah: Talented
How would you describe your music?
Typah: They are cross over. Their like garage and rap all combined. It’s a new sound. It’s like…it will have a garage tempo but with rap on it. It’s very musical.
Ziggy-man: We are constructing songs.
Typah: Yeah, yeah we are doing songs. People out there are doing tunes but we are doing songs. People will hear it, and think that [song] meant something.
What’s one of the weirdest things that has happen to you on set, or in the studio?
Slim: We were at some studio spitting and we had just finished the set. Then all we hear is “everyone be quiet,” and apparently there were feds [police] outside, and we had to stay there. The set finished at ten and we were there till 3:00am.
Ziggy-man: We are all sitting there in the dark and this was the first time we met everyone.
Slim: But someone let one rip! (laughter)
Ziggy-man: I couldn’t even laugh innit because we had to stay quiet.
Slim: Then one guy went out he came back in and he was like everyone go!
Thanks guys, you’ve definitely brightened up my day!
