Being a closet White Stripes fan, with a mere few listens to Brendan Benson's albums in the past under my belt, I was incredibly weary of such a hyped album. I felt I could be setting myself up for a meagre disappointment. After all, it apparently is a 'masterpiece' in waiting according to underground critics, years before its alleged release.

The first track 'Steady As She Goes' opens the album with an immense bang that sets an immediate stage for great thing to appear. With its memorable bassline and great chorus, it's easy to understand why this track tops the most-wanted radio play lists across the country.

Track by track, each song slowly infected me with a growing addiction to Jack White's insatiable lyrics and voice. 'Yellow Sins' is an upbeat rhythmatic whirl of genius from the Raconteurs.

'Together' sees Brendan Benson take the lead, providing the perfect contrast to the darker title track 'Broken Boy Soldiers' that is a weird culmination of pristine Jack White trembling vocals.

The album is a mixture of smooth and distinguishable tracks sprinkled with a few evident future hits that are an easy match to the already released 'Steady As She Goes'. 'Store brought bones' is a stellar ounce of psych rock with the best bits of the White Stripes being captured and compressed with a little extra organ fuelled oomph.

It seems Jack and his new ensemble has worked their magic on me with a unique album evidently made with passion.
