'Latchmere' by The Maccabees (Toast Press)

Musicians have always been able to draw inspiration from the strangest places, from tracks about dirty clothes going round and round in a washing machine ('Mrs. Bartolozzi' by Kate Bush) to fighting for a taxi (Kaiser Chiefs). It seems you can sing about anything these days, so it's no surprise that someone's penned a track about a swimming pool.

'Latchmere' by Brighton band The Maccabees is a song that pays homage to the leisure centre where the band learned to swim. The track starts off with toe-tapping drums and punchy, catchy guitar riffs which build nicely to the first verse. Unfortunately the first few lines sound like it's being sung by a guy with a lisp and a mouth full of painful ulcers. Interesting, nonetheless.

Hardly ground-breaking stuff, yet 'Latchmere' is quirky, light-hearted and slightly tongue-in-cheek, hence worthy of attention. If nothing else, it might get you to drunkenly wave your pint around in the pub singing along to lyrics about veruca socks, cubicles and wave machines.
